Diversity & Inclusion in the Fire Service
Inspector Credit Available: 3
EMS Credits Available: 3

Diversity and Inclusion are issues that the fire service as a whole is continuing to struggle with across the nation. This discussion will address those issues as well as the struggles that our individual department has endured. We want every participant to challenge current paradigms and leave with a different outlook on what their department’s beliefs, behaviors, biases, and cultures are. We will discuss the programs, events, and initiatives that were grassroots lead and administratively supported that successfully improved not only the diversity makeup and culture of our department but also the community's knowledge and understanding of what the fire service is all about. This presentation will be informative, interactive and thought-provoking. We want to give attendees ideas, plans, and goals to establish programs of their own and leave with a different mindset on the importance of Diversity and Inclusion
Our presentation is designed to be thought-provoking and interactive. Our PowerPoint presentation will include audio, video, and personal experience dealing with the challenges related to Diversity and Inclusion. Participants will be asked questions that may challenge some of their current paradigms. Participants will be asked to share their own personal experience and discuss the data related to the successes and failures of diversity and inclusion in the fire service.

Reputation Management in the Digital Age
Inspector Credit Available: 1.5
EMS Credits Available: 1.5

In an era of instant news at your fingertips, the image of your department can be damaged and even destroyed at the speed of light. Are you prepared for the challenges social media presents during a reputation crisis? Do you have policies in place that will help you navigate the crisis, or will your current SOPs make things worse? Have you, your staff and your boss pre-planned the handling of reputation management incidents?

We’ll look at ways to prepare for a reputation crisis and best practices for dealing with one when it occurs. This will include using social media to build reputation equity in your community and making sure you have an early warning system to be on top of any developing situation.

Some of the very skills you’ve honed as fire service leaders will be invaluable when analyzing the crisis before you and working on mitigation. We’ll look at news stories from around the country where some of those skills were used to great advantage and we’ll dissect others where important reputation management lessons were ignored.
